If you own a home in Texas and you have never protested your property taxes — this post is for you.

Here is what most homeowners do not realize. Your property tax appraisal is not final just because it showed up in your mailbox. You have the right to protest it. And in most cases in the greater Houston and Katy area right now — you probably should.

Home values have shifted. Appraisal districts do not always get it right. And the difference between what they say your home is worth and what it is actually worth in today’s market can cost you hundreds — sometimes thousands — of dollars a year in taxes you did not have to pay.

The deadline to protest your 2026 property tax appraisal is May 15th.

That is ten days from now.
